When I see the beautifully exquisite calligraphy of Christina Luo from Fox and Flourish I immediately feel a feeling that we don’t currently have a word for. It’s that feeling that is a mix between happy/sad and ohmygod, you know the one right? Then when I’ve stopped drooling I think about the dedication and patience and skill it takes to make such perfectly formed letters and words and I am even more in awe. So yeah you could say I am a fan of her work ;) Enjoy getting to know Christina below and you'll see why she's so inspiring and wonderful

Who are you, what do you do and where in the world are you?

Hello! My name is Christina Luo and I’m a calligrapher and designer based in beautiful Vancouver, BC. I just graduated from university and now spend my days running a little creative studio called Fox & Flourish, where I work on projects big and small - like logo and branding, chalkboard lettering, tattoo designs, and basically anything that involves word-writing! I currently live by False Creek in a cozy apartment with my Shiba Inu x Eskimo pup, Margot.

What do you believe in?

Having something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. That the mundane moments in daily life are where true clarity is found. I believe that good and purposeful design can change and sustain the world! And that simple objects hold stories and value that we could never fully comprehend - in their timelessness and delicate permanence.

When do you feel your most wonderful?

Stranded in the middle of a sunshower. Sucking down an ice cold milky tea beverage. Waking up very early and falling back asleep. When I have the time to wander aimlessly either in my own city, or a completely foreign one, and witness the tiny cracks in concrete, and the decay of old signage. During the end credits of a really great film. Those first moments when you find a treasure - whether it’s jewellery or a new piece of furniture - bring it home, and bask in its beauty.

What is something wonderful that has happened that would have never have happened if you hadn't made a mistake or a wrong turn somewhere?

Oh, so many things. I would honestly say that my current amazing life is the result of a series of unfortunate events, accidents, and coincidences. Taking and enduring that job with the nasty boss, friendships ending to make room for new ones, starting multiple failed ventures/blogs/business ideas along the way - the list goes on!

What is the earliest time in your life that you can remember experiencing wonder? When was the most recent time?

I have a remarkably terrible memory especially when it comes to my childhood, but I would say it must be when I discovered graffiti and the street art in the third grade. That was my first peek into a subculture that embraced typography and lettering. I also remember being pretty stoked on programs like Paint Shop Pro (before Photoshop became the pillar for design) and experimenting with making moving graphics/selling them for internet currency on online forums. I was quite the child of the internet.

Recently, it would have to be my recent trip to Europe, and visiting Amsterdam in particular. It was my last destination and I was already feeling quite tired from travelling, but something about the unexpectedness of Amsterdam’s beauty paired with the amazing local independant culture they have established there created the perfect concoction of pure wonder for me. Everyone there smiles at each other on the street, and there are people in boats under canals everywhere!

Who are three wonderful people you think we need to know about. Why are they wonderful?

I’m biased as the following ladies have become dear friends of mine, but I swear they are some of the most talented people I know:

Sarah Nickerson of The Nickersons Photography - she is such a good soul, with a wicked sense of humour, and was just recognized as one of Canada’s top 30 under 30 photographers.

Katherine Huie of Foe & Dear - this girl works her butt off creating amazing delicate jewellery that everybody, including me, is totally obsessed with and will never take off. And rightly so, as I’ve sat with her and watched her meticulously hammer a tiny ring with so much concentration!

Lucy Poskitt of Lucy Poskitt Textiles - I met Lucy at her place of work and she and I clicked really quickly. She began her public journey in weaving recently and has already had her own solo show. Serious talent in one human.
