Today I'd like to introduce you to another wonderful person! Today we are going to get to know my friend Samantha Darling. Incase you were wondering she is actually a darling and also inspiring, honest and pretty badass in the best way. I sat next to her at an Etsy party a few years ago, we clicked and I am so glad we are friends! I almost didn't go to the event because I didn't know anyone and hadn't yet learned that not knowing anyone is actually a great reason in itself to go to something. I'd love to go on and on about how great she is but instead why don't you just read her answers and you'll get an idea for yourself.
Who are you, what do you do and where in the world are you?
Who are you, what Hello! I hail from the wonderfully grey and wet lands of Portland Oregon. My name is Samantha Darling and I am a creative problem-solver who turns discarded goods and chaotic messes into jewellery.
What do you believe in?
I believe in a hot cup of tea to wake me up in the morning and to lull me to sleep at night.
When do you feel your most wonderful?
When a wrong turn becomes a happy series of discoveries. It doesn't take much, maybe stumbling on a new coffee shop or a little vintage store. I love surrounding myself with old things, whether it's old books, decrepit wooden crates and broken trinkets or old souls.
What is something wonderful that has happened that would have never have happened if you hadn't made a mistake or a wrong turn somewhere?
Just about everything! I think I am pre-wired to make wrong turns because I am very analytical and prone to over thinking in most parts of my life. So when I travel abroad or even in my own city, I will purposely get on the wrong bus or take a wrong turn to be happily surprised by some unsuspecting happenstance.
What is the earliest time in your life that you can remember experiencing wonder? When was the most recent time?
As the youngest of three, I think I always experienced wonder while following my brothers around. Whether they were collecting silk worms, playing marbles or doing homework I can remember being in awe of them and thinking everything they did was amazing. Most recently I was overwhelmed with excitement when I found the Grand Marketplace in Portland. It's a gorgeous cacophony of vintage and antique bits and bobs...I went home and thought 'I could live in that shop'.
What is your least favourite compliment?
Least favourite compliment...any compliment that comes with a full body eye scan at the same time. I tend to notice people's body language more than their words and a compliment without eye contact often feels like an empty gesture in disguise.
What tv show would you love to live in? What tv show do you actually live in?
I wish I could live in New Girl....but realistically my life is more Dharma and Greg.
What is something so gross or unlovable that you just adore?
Well that's a tough question to answer because I happen to love a lot of things that other people find odd or unlovable. I think the most peculiar of them would be my fascination with oddly shaped noses. I love to draw them and I'm always drawn to people with large or uniquely shaped noses because I find they have more character than your run-of-the-mill typical nosed folk.
Who are three wonderful people you think we need to know about. Why are they wonderful?
One of the most inspirational people I know is my friend Vanessa. To me, she is the epitome of creativity, whether its in her artwork, her home and studio decor or her personal style. She's like my living breathing Pinterest board!
Craft'ed Van, Crafty superstar duo
From a creative and especially from a creative business standpoint, Diana Luong and Erica Carreras from Craft'ed Vancouver never cease to leave me in awe of their energy, business savvy and positive attitudes. One day they decided to start a little business to sell their crafts and the next they took Etsy.com by storm with over 4,000 sales in a year!
Jana Berna, Midnight Visions Artworks
Aside from Tara Galuska designs, the next most common pieces from artistic friends that you'll find in my home is by Jana Berna of Midnight Visions Artworks. Jana's pottery is stunning with glazes that make me want to curl up with a good book. I commissioned her to make matching mugs for the first Christmas gift I gave my husband and it is still the only mug I drink my tea from! It's so special to have part of a friend's creativity as such an integral moment of each day - it really starts things off on a positive note.
